Microdermabrasion

The harsh UV rays emitted by the sun, dust and pollutants that linger in the air, build-up of dead and damaged skin cells — these factors and others can give your once-radiant complexion a dull and drab appearance. Your skin is exposed to environmental threats day-in and day-out, and sometimes your daily skincare regimen just doesn’t cut it.

Microdermabrasion is a gentle, noninvasive, nonchemical treatment that exfoliates the skin to reveal a healthier, glowing complexion. A microdermabrasion treatment removes the skin’s uppermost layer, clearing away debris and essentially hitting the reset button on your appearance. One microdermabrasion session at Senza Aesthetic Medicine is enough to give you smoother, brighter, more refined skin.

The Microdermabrasion Treatment

There are different types of microdermabrasion. At Senza Aesthetics Medicine, we used a diamond tip device that gently abrades the top level of skin each time it passes over it. Simultaneously, the device’s integrated vacuum technology suctions away dirt and dead skin cells. This treatment improves fine wrinkles, skin texture and pigmentation, leaving the skin more vibrant and supple. It also stimulates the elastic tissue below the skin’s surface, resulting in a healthier and firmer appearance.

Microdermabrasion treatments are administered by one of our trained aestheticians. An excellent alternative or complement to chemical peels, the microdermabrasion treatment is noninvasive, pain-free and requires no downtime after treatment. This system is more gentle and effective than other exfoliating systems, even at higher settings. The length of the treatment and number of treatments vary depending on skin type and condition. Results are gradual but highly effective. Most people experience softer, smoother skin after their first treatment.

Why do we need microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is a flexible treatment often used to treat various aesthetic concerns, ranging from fine lines and wrinkles to sunspots and enlarged pores. There are many causes of these facial concerns, which means preventative care can become extremely cumbersome.

As we start to move further into the aging process, our bodies produce fewer essential proteins. Many of those proteins keep our skin looking youthful and taut. Without them, fine lines, wrinkles and folds begin to develop. Microdermabrasion encourages the creation of new proteins, leading to the subtle correction of these concerns.

Skin discoloration takes many forms. Sunspots, age spots, birthmarks, etc., are all features that some people may prefer to live without. Since microdermabrasion removes a top layer of the skin where much discoloration lives, it is possible to remove similar types of blemishes.

Other concerns, like acne scarring, active acne or even poor skin glow, are also quickly addressed with microdermabrasion. Removing the top layer of your skin removes the pollutants and dead cells that are often associated with a dull complexion and acne.

What should I expect from a Microdermabrasion procedure?

A microdermabrasion procedure is as simple as it is effective. As you are brought back into the procedure area and sat down, you won’t even need to worry about having any numbing agent applied. Most of our patients who have this treatment done describe the sensation as a light scraping.

Once the unwanted layer of dead skin cells and other pollutants have been removed, a vibrant, healthy layer will be revealed. Our diamond-tipped device immediately suctions away unwanted debris to avoid contamination.

While your new skin will look noticeably better, it is also very susceptible to damage, which means you will need to take particular care to protect your skin immediately after the procedure. This routine typically includes sunscreens and moisturizers.

Can I combine my microdermabrasion with other procedures?

Microdermabrasion is a noninvasive treatment, which means you can still have many different types of procedures performed alongside it. Since digging too deeply into the layers of the skin could be harmful, some combinations may need a small amount of time between procedures to achieve the best possible results.

Here are some of the combinations we believe are the most effective.

Chemical Peel

We have all seen videos of people using peels to strip away dirt from pores. Chemical peels, however, go beyond what your typical off-the-shelf skin peel can achieve. They are offered in three different strengths: light, medium and deep, targeting increasingly extensive cosmetic concerns.

Hydrafacial

This is a procedure that is closely related to microdermabrasion. The only difference is that this procedure can add valuable substances back into your skin as it removes the top layer of poor skin with a water-based medical device.

Microneedling

Microdermabrasion addresses the top-most layer of skin. But microneedling looks to improve all of the same conditions deeper in the dermis. It does this by rolling tiny needles throughout the skin, creating a series of microwounds. Your body’s response to this is to begin the natural healing process, causing a myriad of positive effects to develop.

Botox

This one is different from the other procedures, primarily because it is an injectable procedure rather than a topical one. But some of the things that microdermabrasion can struggle to contend with are deep folds throughout the face. Botox can pick up any of the wrinkles that topical procedures leave behind.
