What Is the AcneZap Acne Treatment?

AcneZap is the first and only laser device to be FDA-cleared for the treatment of acne. The device utilizes a 1726nm wavelength laser complete with contact cooling technology to ensure patient safety and comfort. This particular laser wavelength is able to target sebaceous glands while nearby skin structures remain unaffected.

By targeting sebaceous glands, AcneZap treats one of the root causes of acne: excess sebum production. Increased sebum production can clog pores and create a breeding ground for bacteria that cause acne. By selectively destroying problem sebaceous glands, AcneZap brings sebum production to normal levels. Only three treatment sessions are usually needed, and patients often report improvement in their acne over time.

AcneZap can be used on all types of acne, from mild to severe cystic acne. The device has been tested in clinical studies, with over 90 percent of patients responding to treatment and 80 percent seeing a significant reduction in their acne.

Is an AcneZap Treatment Comfortable?

AcneZap is designed with your comfort in mind. Not only does this laser selectively target problem sebaceous glands, but it also doesn’t cause damage to nearby structures. The device also has a built-in sapphire contact cooling system to keep you comfortable and your skin safe. That’s why no pain mitigation is needed with this treatment, and you’ll most likely feel just a slight snapping sensation.

How Do I Prepare for an AcneZap Treatment?

In the days leading up to your AcneZap treatment, avoid alcohol and discontinue blood-thinning medicines and supplements (such as NSAIDs, vitamin E and fish oil) to reduce your risk of bruising and bleeding. You will also need to avoid retinoids, exfoliants, astringents, and other harsh skincare products as well as all types of tanning before your procedure. The AcneZap procedure is generally tolerable, but if you are pain-sensitive, it is a good idea to take an over-the-counter pain reliever an hour before your treatment.

What Happens During an AcneZap Treatment?

Before starting your treatment, we will cleanse your skin to remove all traces of dirt and oil. We may also first do a patch test so we can adjust the device’s strength to your pain tolerance levels. Your provider will pass the AcneZap handpiece over your skin until all problem areas are treated. You may feel warmth or a snapping sensation, which is usually tolerable. The procedure should be over in about 30 minutes.

How Many AcneZap Treatments Will I Need?

Most patients need a total of three AcneZap treatments, spaced four to six weeks apart, to see a noticeable improvement. This is true no matter if you have mild, moderate or severe acne since multiple treatment sessions are necessary to target all problem sebaceous glands.

Does AcneZap Require Any Downtime?

AcneZap does not require any downtime. You should, however, take good care of your skin post-treatment to avoid complications. This usually entails wearing mineral SPF 30 sunscreen, using a gentle cleanser and applying daily moisturizer.

What Areas Can AcneZap Treat?

AcneZap was FDA-cleared for the treatment of mild to severe acne on the face. This includes the cheeks, forehead, nose and chin.
