21 Benefits of Microdermabrasion

There are a lot of cosmetic treatments available to the average person looking to improve the appearance of their skin. Microdermabrasion, however, is one of the most effective and versatile with one of the fewest drawbacks on the market. To put how great of a treatment it is into perspective, we gathered 21 of the most prominent benefits of microdermabrasion:

1. It provides results after one treatment.

A lot of times, topical procedures need time to show results. While most nonsurgical options provide some immediate benefit, they are usually pretty underwhelming in the first few hours. Microdermabrasion does not have that problem — as soon as you begin your surgery, your face will appear more vibrant and healthy.

2. It is virtually painless.

Microdermabrasion is a topical procedure, which means no needles, razors or lasers penetrating your skin. You will feel some pressure and maybe the occasional tender spot, but the vast majority of our patients report they felt virtually no pain during the entire process.

3. It can be performed regularly.

Our skin is the first line of defense against UV exposure and free radicals. This means that we need to find ways to regularly rejuvenate our skin after it has been fighting against all these factors. Microdermabrasion can be performed regularly on a treatment plan, meaning it is a reliable way to continually have glowing skin.

4. It boosts collagen.

After the age of 20, we lose roughly 1% of our collagen production every year. Collagen is an essential building block in our bodies and the most plentiful protein we produce. As its production begins to slow, it affects every area of our bodies, but our skin is usually the first place we notice it since it often results in cosmetic concerns. Dermabrasion tricks the body into the natural healing process, which floods the area with new collagen production.

5. It can correct discoloration.

Most hyperpigmentation concerns rest in the outermost layer of the skin. Microdermabrasion focuses on removing this layer of tissue to reveal a more uniform and healthy layer of skin that environmental factors have not damaged. Melasma, rosacea and even acne scar discoloration can be addressed relatively easily by this treatment.

6. It will shrink and unclog pores.

By buffing away at the surface layer of skin, oil, dirt and other debris are gently — but thoroughly — removed from the pores. With less to hold, the pores naturally reduce in size and become significantly less noticeable throughout the face. This creates a smoother appearance throughout the face and helps prevent future breakouts by alleviating clogged pores.

7. It can treat acne scars.

Scars are often multiple layers deep within the skin. But much of the textural and color concern lies on the surface. This means microdermabrasion can trigger the body’s healing response to flood the area with new collagen, elastin and other proteins. These substances will stick around in the scarred area, smoothing out the valleys and peaks of the scars and blending the color with the surrounding skin associated with acne scarring. This process can help with other types of scarring as well.

8. It provides a natural glow.

When someone has healthy, beautiful skin, it is hard not to take notice. We don’t all walk around with skin that turns heads because most of us do not address the damage that has been done. Think of it as you would think of a handyman developing a callus. As the world beats down against our skin, it has to harden to be able to take it all in stride. Unfortunately, tough skin is not always vibrant, but microdermabrasion can reveal that underlying, untouched layer of skin through exfoliation.

9. It can reduce fine lines and wrinkles.

Collagen, as you can tell from this list, is a big deal. It is the primary substance responsible for keeping our skin taut. But as our collagen count declines, so does our skin elasticity. Many patients experience significant improvement to fine lines and wrinkles after microdermabrasion since it boosts collagen production in the problematic areas.

10. It is safe for darker skin.

In some cases, treatments like lasers and chemical peels are not suitable for patients with darker skin. This is a prominent issue for darker-toned patients who are interested in maintaining a healthy appearance. But the principles of microdermabrasion are essentially universal — we all have and need collagen, and we all face environmental skin damage. Therefore, we all can benefit from microdermabrasion treatment, even if our skin isn’t suitable for other procedures.

11. It works on oily skin.

Oily skin is no problem for microdermabrasion. While it is usually not a good way to prevent oily skin from occurring (the problem lies much deeper than the outer layer of skin), having oily skin in itself does not prevent you from being a good candidate for this kind of treatment.

12. It is suitable for most patients.

There are very few medical conditions and factors that would prevent you from being a good candidate for microdermabrasion. Most of those conditions haveMicrodermabrasion Patient to do with your skin health, so always make sure to consult with your physician and disclose all diagnoses so you can be sure it is safe for you.

13. It has very few side effects.

Minor discomfort and subtle redness. For an overwhelming majority of our patients, these are the only side effects to really develop during or after a microdermabrasion procedure. Microdermabrasion is a solid option for people who are worried about creating a more significant problem by addressing their skin concerns.

14. It is safe during pregnancy.

Cosmetic treatments that are safe for pregnant women are few and far between. There are no chemicals or invasive procedures required during this treatment. And in many cases, this procedure can even be performed without the need for topical numbing agents. Since microdermabrasion is basically a medical-grade exfoliation, there is no risk to pregnant women or women that may become pregnant.

15. It can reduce stretch marks.

Speaking of pregnancy — stretch marks are often an unsolvable aesthetic concern for women since the only solution is often excision. But dermabrasion can be used as an effective way to reduce the stretch marks and scars that are associated with pregnancy. Since it is only of the only pregnancy-safe cosmetic options, it is a desirable treatment for many pregnant women.

16. It doesn’t require much prep.

You won’t need to worry about any lengthy pre-procedural checklists or having to adjust a ton of things in your life for a microdermabrasion treatment. In fact, you can often come and go without noticing hardly any impact on your usual routines. The only thing you typically need to worry about is making sure you don’t get sunburnt since it can cause some unnecessary pain and discomfort during the procedure.

17. It only takes up to 60 minutes to perform.

Sixty minutes is a lengthier session typically reserved for patients who need extensive correction or have unique conditions to treat. Most of our patients are in the room between 30 to 45 minutes from start to finish, meaning that you can often have the treatment performed during a normal lunch hour. (Especially since we are conveniently located for most people in the Inland Empire.)

18. It has essentially no recovery time.

You will have a bit of redness and mild irritation, but you will not be dealing with any unbearable pain or discomfort from excisions or more extensive procedures. The side effects you experience will typically dissipate within a day or two, leaving only improved skin to enjoy.

19. It allows you to get right back to work.

With no recovery time, anesthetic or problematic side effects, you won’t need to use any of your vacation time or even show up a little late for work. The worst that can happen is that a coworker might notice some mild redness, but there will be nothing stopping you from getting right back to work or other responsibilities.

20. It lets you wear makeup a day later.

Microdermabrasion is noninvasive, so using makeup a day after the procedure is unlikely to lead to any health or cosmetic concerns. This makes it a great option to have right before a big event like a wedding or vacation, but we recommend having it performed at least a few days in advance to let any redness settle. It would help if you also had at least one session performed well in advance, so you know how your skin will react to the treatment.
