The most common cause of hair loss is heredity. Men and women inherit the genes for hair loss from either or both parents. Men inherit a gene which causes the hair to be sensitive to the male hormones. The age of onset, extent, and rate of hair loss vary from person to person. Severe illness, malnutrition, or vitamin deficiency can accelerate this process. Causes of hair loss do not include wearing a hat, excessive shampooing, lack of blood, or clogged pores.
Women usually get general thinning rather than male pattern baldness.
Yes. Hair in the donor site, which is the back and sides of the head, is not sensitive to the male hormones. This hair is removed, usually in a strip about as wide as your finger and cut under a microscope into the naturally occurring groups of hair called follicular units. These groups usually have 2 or 3 hairs but may have 4 or 5 hairs. These follicular unit grafts are then inserted into tiny needle holes where they take route and grow. The grafts retain the characteristics of the region from where they were taken. They grow in their new location just the same as they would if they had remained in the sides or back from where they came. This rule is called “donor dominance.” Years ago large circular grafts were used. It was extremely difficult to obtain natural looking results using these large grafts and a transplant could be detected in many of these patients. Modern hair transplants using follicular units can not be detected from natural non-transplanted hair.
We take great pride in not hurting our patients. The procedure is done under local anesthesia. We use a very fine needle and just get a drop of lidocaine under the skin. From then on we only put the needle in the numb area and inject it under the skin and allow it to seep to the surface and make that area numb. In this way we advance around the head with minimal discomfort.
I will send you home with some pain pills but most patients don’t use any. The few that do say it didn’t hurt but they were afraid that it might. Prior to two years ago most patients took pain pills but recently I have been adding Marcaine to the stitches before the patient leaves the office and nobody complains of pain.
From the sides and the back—this hair is not sensitive to the male hormones which affect the areas where you are losing hair.
The grafts form small scabs, about the size of the head of a pin in a few days after the procedure. If you have enough surrounding hair the scabs can be covered over by creative styling. If not, they are not very noticeable. If they bother you, you can cover them with make-up. The scabs are usually gone in a week or two.
Yes, it will begin to grow after 90 days. The average person grows ½ inch/month. Thus after six moths most patients have hair 1 ½ inches long. It will continue to grow after that.
We transplant men and women—heads, eyebrows, eyelashes, moustaches, beards, scars and rarely other areas.
Depending on the type of procedure and the type of work that you do it is often possible to go back to work the next day. I will discuss this with you during your consultation.
Most people can begin light exercise in 4 to 5 days. You can take a walk the day following surgery. A slow jog and light weights at 4 or 5 days. You cannot swim for two weeks because you might soak the grafts out.
Little or no pain, ten percent get some swelling of the face. This usually is bags under the eyes and a swollen forehead. It usually begins on the third day and usually lasts 3 to 4 days. You may have some numbness above the donor region which goes away. After three months the hair begins to grow and every day you appear younger and better looking.
You literally will decide this. You can put in a small amount of hair or a larger amount.
I will give you at least three options at the time of consultations and I will show you photos of patients who chose to put in that much hair. The difference is in the density of the transplanted hair and the area covered. Every one of the options will be undetectable as a transplant. It is possible to put in a small amount of hair to control the cost then, six months, or one year, or two years later add to it. Almost everybody says that it was the best investment they ever made.
